Unusual changes to the face, neck or mouth may be the beginning of pathologic disease. Therefore, early detection and treatment is essential to promote long-term oral health.
Who Can Benefit From Oral Pathology Treatment?
Anyone who is experiencing abnormal changes to their face, neck or mouth may benefit from oral pathology treatment. One or more of the following may indicate the beginning of a pathological process:
- Sores that do not heal and bleed easily
- Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
- Lumps on the inside of the mouth
- Trouble swallowing or chewing
- Frequent sore throat or hoarseness
- A mass or lump in the neck
Tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition and some infections may increase your risk of disease. Oral pathology care promotes early detection and successful treatment.
What to Expect During Your Oral Pathology Treatment
Numerous exams and diagnostic tests may be conducted to determine the cause of your symptoms. A biopsy is usually performed to investigate suspicious tissue.
During a biopsy, a portion of the tissue is removed and sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic analysis. The results from your biopsy report will allow us to establish a diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan. Medical and/or surgical intervention may be necessary.
After Your Treatment
Recovery will depend on the extent of your diagnosis and treatment. You will be monitored closely during the first several days and weeks of recovery to ensure proper healing.
Following recovery, it is recommended that you complete monthly oral self-exams. If you are at a high risk for oral cancer, you should also see an oral surgeon or dentist for annual check-ups.
