Soft Tissue Grafting

Gum recession is a common dental problem that can affect your physical appearance and oral health. When left untreated, gingivitis and bone loss can weaken the foundation of your smile. Soft tissue grafting is a procedure that solves these problems by restoring health and appearance to the gum line.

Who Can Benefit From Soft Tissue Grafting?

Chronic periodontal disease, poor dental hygiene, teeth grinding and overaggressive brushing may all contribute to gum recession. Soft tissue grafting is used to create or augment gum tissue that has retracted from the teeth.

Soft tissue grafting can:

  • Plump up deficient gum tissue
  • Stop gum recession and bone loss
  • Correct asymmetrical gums
  • Reduce tooth sensitivity

Soft tissue grafting is a highly predictable procedure that can improve the appearance, function, stability and comfort of your teeth. Ideal candidates for soft tissue grafting will be in good health.

What to Expect During Your Soft Tissue Grafting

We begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment areas. An incision is made on the roof of your mouth and a small strip of tissue is removed. This tissue is then attached to the recessed gum line. Once all the tissue and been successfully removed and transplanted, incisions are secured with sutures.

After Your Surgery

You will be able to return home immediately after your procedure. It is common to experience some discomfort and minor bleeding near the treatment area. We can prescribe pain medication to make this process more comfortable. You should be able to resume most normal activities within a couple days, though you should not brush or floss the treatment area for at least two weeks. It may take up to six weeks for full results to be visible.

Understanding the Risks of Soft Tissue Grafting

All surgical procedures have risks, including soft tissue grafting. These risks and other safety information will be reviewed in-depth during your consultation. Potential adverse events include visible scarring, discoloration, insufficient gum coverage or unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome.
